The Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), Maitama Branch, successfully commissioned her first 2026 Community Engineering Project (Solar-Powered Borehole) at L.E.A Primary School, Gidan Ajiya, Orozo, Abuja, on Tuesday, 13th January 2026.
The event marked another significant milestone in the Branch’s commitment to upholding the dignity of the engineering profession through impactful community service, with a strong focus on sustainable development and access to clean water.
The ceremony was graced by the President of the Nigerian Society of Engineers, Engr. Ali A. Rabiu, FNSE, FAEng, MFR, who formally commissioned the project. His presence underscored the national leadership’s support for community-driven engineering initiatives that directly improve the quality of life of Nigerians.
Also in attendance were distinguished guests, senior Engineers and community leaders, including:
• Engr. Valerie Ifueko Agberegba, FNSE, Deputy President,
• Engr. kashim Ali, FNSE, Past presidents,
• Engr. Tasiu Wudil, FNSE, Past president and other engineers in FCT.
•Mr. Aliyu Auwal, Head Teacher, officials and pupils of L.E.A Primary School, Gidan Ajiya school
•ESU Sule Baba, Traditional Chief of Gidan Ajiya Community.
The Host of the occasion, Engr. Itodo T. Ocheme, FNSE, Chairman of NSE Maitama Branch, welcomed guests and highlighted the importance of engineering solutions that address real community needs. He emphasized that the solar-powered borehole aligns with the Branch’s vision of promoting sustainability, innovation, and social responsibility.
During the commissioning, the NSE President performed the symbolic ribbon-cutting, officially handing over the project to the Gidan Ajiya community. The solar-powered borehole is expected to provide reliable and clean water to the school and surrounding community, reducing water scarcity and supporting public health and education.
In his remarks, Engr. Ali A. Rabiu, FNSE, FAEng, MFR, commended the Maitama Branch for its consistency in executing meaningful community projects and encouraged other branches to emulate such initiatives that showcase the practical relevance of engineering to national development.
In a Press statement signed by by the Publicity Secretary of the branch, Engr. Ikakke Afangideh, MNSE, the Head Teacher and the community Chief expressed deep appreciation to the Nigerian Society of Engineers for the intervention, describing the project as timely and life-changing. They pledged proper ownership and maintenance of the facility.
